What it Takes to Succeed

Sometimes it’s worth stepping back to realize just how far you’ve really come. With our fifteenth anniversary approaching, two employees recently hitting their 10-year anniversaries, and ready to accept a recent win for General Excellence in Small Business, it really makes us reflect upon where we came from and where we are headed.

We had a vision over almost 2 decades ago. Our core vision was to provide locally targeted advertising in premium national magazines. My partners and I came together to put a strategy together and develop our vision into reality. We presented our plan and eventually forged an exclusive partnership with Condé Nast. The rest is history. Additionally, we then integrated industry leading digital programs into our product portfolio and changed the way we serve our customers. In the past 10 years or so, it has been an integrated, 360 approach to best target the audience they need — leveraging premium media solutions.

For almost 15 years, we have worked with more than 1000 clients, both small and large, and watched our company grow with people, process, and most importantly, product. There are 28.8 million small businesses in the U.S., accounting for 99.7% of all business in the US. As a small business, it takes constant and consistent innovation and dedication to sustain the company. Now, consider the media industry. It has been an ever-evolving landscape with media shifts, economic swings, and constant innovation. We’re proud of the way we managed change and continued to grow.

Here are three core principles that helped us succeed.
We think that they are relevant in any business and are what keeps a company thriving…and competitive.

  • Product before Profit: It’s critical to know that our products solve our clients’ problems and helps them achieve their goals. Success in business requires doing something you’re passionate about that fills a need in the marketplace. Many companies offer “off the shelf” solutions, but it is the consultative approach and in our case, the “localization” of premium media that empowers us to have a competitive edge.
  • Make the People Promise: A company can accomplish amazing things when it has leadership and a team who is inspired, hardworking and believes in the company’s mission. And one of our core missions is to take a ‘customer first’ approach—being a partner, providing consultation, and building a media strategy that drives results.
  • Perfect the Process: “85 percent of the reasons for failure to meet customer expectations are related to deficiencies in systems and processes…rather than the employee.” It’s crucial that we always have a full and clear understanding of our company’s processes and have the right systems in place. In recent years, we have integrated new technology to streamline and automate processes, both internal and client facing. Unfortunately, nothing stays the same forever. We continually assess and consider new solutions, processes, and products that can help us do our jobs better and deliver superior products to our clients.

It has been an exciting journey — certainly not without some pitfalls along the way. But, we like the challenges and look forward to what’s ahead. Now, we’re off to the awards ceremony to accept our latest award, Small Business Award in General Excellence. Cheers to our entire team who made it happen!
